The Family Mediation Project

    About This Project

The Family Mediation Project exists to help people better understand family mediation. It was created to dispel common myths, explain processes clearly, and provide accessible information at a time when many people feel overwhelmed or uncertain.

    Why this project exists

    Family mediation is often misunderstood.

Many people encounter it for the first time during separation or divorce, at a moment when emotions are high and information can feel confusing or contradictory.

This project was created to provide clear, neutral explanations of family mediation, MIAMs, court processes, and related topics — without pressure or judgement.

What this site is — and what it is not

    This site is:

    • an educational information resource
    • written in plain English
    • designed for people in England & Wales
    • focused on clarity, transparency, and understanding

    This site is not:

    • legal advice
    • a substitute for professional support
    • a place to pressure people into mediation
    • a court or legal service

    Who this project is for

The Family Mediation Project is designed for:

    • people considering separation or divorce
    • parents navigating child arrangements
    • individuals exploring mediation or court options
    • professionals supporting families through change

You do not need prior knowledge of mediation to use this site.

    Who operates this project

The Family Mediation Project is owned and operated by Digital MIAM.

Digital MIAM is an online service that provides Mediation Information and Assessment Meetings (MIAMs) and access to family mediation delivered by qualified mediators in England & Wales.

This project was created as a separate educational initiative to help improve understanding of mediation and make the process more transparent.

While this site may link to Digital MIAM where relevant, its primary purpose is education and public understanding.

    Our approach

We believe that people make better decisions when they understand their options.

    Safety and suitability

Family mediation is not suitable for every situation.

Where there are safety concerns, coercion, or domestic abuse, mediation may not be appropriate.

This site includes signposting to support services and encourages people to seek urgent help where necessary.

    Understanding your next steps

Some people use this site purely for information.

Others use it to help decide whether to:

    • attend a MIAM
    • explore mediation
    • seek legal advice
    • apply to court

Understanding the process does not commit you to any outcome.

If you would like to explore mediation

If, after reviewing the information on this site, you would like to explore whether mediation may be suitable for your situation, a MIAM can help explain your options.
